Our Technology

Our state-of-the-art Photo Printer

Darby Photos portraits are produced using the traditional wet process and the paper is developed and fixed using photographic chemicals.
This means that unlike inkjet printing—where the ink sits on top of the paper surface and ink colour can alter the reflective properties of the paper—in our system all colour in the photographic print is locked away behind a top layer (like a laminate) and therefore have the same reflectivity.

Using our printer, the paper receives the image via LED lights, that expose the paper as super high resolutions to create pixel-free images, with a huge range of colours and tonal quality.

The resolution of our printer is specified in continuous tone Pixels per Inch. Inkjet printers specify resolution in Dots (of ink) Per Inch.  It is generally considered that it takes 5-6 times the resolution in DPI to match continuous tone LED resolution. It would take an ink jet printer at least 2200 DPI of resolution to equal the quality of our  printer’s patented LED Resolution Enhancement Technology.

The most direct comparison of our printing quantity would be printing using Lightjet technology. This is a popular high end photography printing method used by many labs. Our method using the LED lights to apply the image to the paper arguably creates higher contrast and increased tonal quality. Both methods use the same paper and the wet process,  the difference is the technology behind how the image is transmitted to the paper.  The other difference is our prices, they tend to be significantly lower.

Paper Choices

Glossy portraits are printed on coated paper with a smooth, shiny reflective surface. This finish has a high-contrast appearance that is slick to the touch when not under glass. This finish has an excellent dynamic range and color – slightly more “pop” than lustre paper. If the final portrait will be framed behind glass you will find this “pop” less noticeable.

  • Portraits have a shiny finish.
  • Colors are vibrant.
  • Images are crisp and sharp
  • Glossy finish does not produce a textured look when scanned and converted to digital.

All prints are printed on Kodak Professional Endura Paper.  Transparency prints are also available.

This paper is the premier paper traditionally most preferred by portrait and wedding photographers. The lustre finish is considered more of a professional-grade paper. Lustre has a slight gloss with a subtle, pearl-like texture. Lustre paper has a deeper color-saturation than matte, has a higher contrast, and is thicker than general consumer paper.

  • Fingerprints and smudges are not as visible
  • Anti glare
  • Pro quality paper
  • Great for framing / Art
  • Excellent for wedding photos, very versatile

All prints are printed on Kodak Professional Endura Paper.  Transparency prints are also available.

Metallic paper is extremely durable and produces an almost chrome-like burnished appearance. Many describe the look as “chrome on paper”. The glossy finish and metallic look of this paper will enable you to create prints with exceptional visual interest and depth. This paper must be seen to believe!

Please note: Metallic Prints add an additional 25% to the  print cost

  • Striking, distinctive, eye-catching metallic look
  • Increased color gamut for rich impact and intense blacks to enhance print appeal
  • Exceptional sharpness
